The UK Atomic Energy Authority and Bassetlaw District Council invite to you a special Fusion Energy business reception

The Fusion Energy business reception will be a valuable opportunity for businesses and organisations to connect from across the wider regions and celebrate the World’s first Fusion Energy Café and to learn about the exciting future opportunities from the STEP Fusion Plant in North Nottinghamshire.

The reception will feature fusion energy displays, delicious food from the Fusion Energy Café and drinks and is supported by KuKu Connect. There will be a diverse range of business sectors and local and regional leaders to network with during the evening, with tours of the Bridge Skills Hub.

The Fusion Energy Café

The world’s first, ‘Fusion Energy Café – this modern and inspirational Café is housed in the Bridge Skills Hub in Worksop, Nottinghamshire. It is a unique collaboration between The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) and Bassetlaw District Council and aims to develop the facilities, infrastructure, and skills to support a thriving fusion sector in the UK.

The café’s interior resembles the inside of a tokamak – a machine used in the creation of fusion plasmas – and its menu is inspired by the promise that fusion can be an environmentally responsible part of the world’s future energy supply.

Upskilling and Inspiring the Local Community

This community-focused initiative will support students studying Apprenticeships, H.E. or Return-to-Work programmes of study at The Bridge. Its aim is to help with the levelling-up agenda providing local people with the skills, knowledge and aspirations that could see them forge a career in the wider fusion energy sector.

The Fusion Energy Café’s aim is to actively engage the Worksop and Nottinghamshire local communities in fusion energy and technical training, particularly as West Burton, Nottinghamshire, has been designated as the site for the prototype fusion powerplant. www.fusionenergycafe.org

What is STEP?

The UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), a non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, leads the development of sustainable fusion energy to maximise scientific and economic benefits.

The STEP (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production) prototype fusion plant will be built at the West Burton site in North Nottinghamshire. Designed to demonstrate net electricity generation from fusion, STEP aims to lay the foundation for future commercial fusion power plants.

Fusion, the process that powers the sun, offers a safe, low-carbon, and potentially limitless energy source. It involves fusing hydrogen isotopes at extremely high temperatures to produce helium and release vast energy, which can be used to generate electricity more efficiently than fossil fuels.

Backed by the UK Government, the STEP programme will create thousands of skilled jobs, support high-tech industry growth, and establish apprenticeship training centres in Nottinghamshire. First operations are targeted for the early 2040s, positioning the UK at the forefront of global fusion energy development.
